Throughout the 20th century, York College for Girls - which opened in
1908 - was responsible for educating some of the most important women
in Britain, including, famously, Dame Janet Baker, the internationally
renowned mezzo soprano (the college was noted for its excellent
music department). Ranked the top school in York, the College has many famous former pupils including doctors, solicitors and university lecturers.


Back in the College days, La Vecchia Scuola's main pillared entrance was used exclusively by teachers and parents - pupils were entered via a door at the back of the building. But in the mid-1990s, Erica Taylor, the last Headmistress, made the green door the main school entrance for all.
